20 Years Ago: Tony Rolfe
Ten tricks the elegant way

The following deal appeared in our Big Deal column in the August 2006 issue.
Tony Rolfe, the president of the Mollymook Bridge Club, played this hand in the qualifying round of his club's Congress Pairs.

He was in 2NT from South on the lead of a small heart. He won the lead with the ]Q, ran the {Q and played small to the {J, with both opponents playing small both times.
The diamonds were now good so he had his eight tricks but this was pairs so he set about making more.
He led the }10 off table, and when East played low he played the }J from hand, which won. Now he had nine tricks but that still wasn't enough.
He exited with a spade from hand. West played the king and East thought for a long time before overtaking with the ace and returning a heart. Tony took a big chance by ducking. If West had shifted to a club Tony would have been back to eight tricks, but West continued hearts. He won the ]A, pitching a spade from dummy, and ran the diamonds reducing everyone to three cards.
The play so far had given Tony certain indications of who held what. The club play made it clear that East had the king and the spade play suggested that East had started with the queen as well as the ace.
So, after running the diamonds, Tony was sure that this was the position:

In order to keep guard of the black suits East had been forced to give up any heart winners.
So Tony exited with a spade at trick 11 and East was forced to lead back into the clubs to yield ten tricks.
Needless to say, Tony had a top board. This was the full deal:
