From the NABC daily bulletin

The team of David des Jardins, Andrew Gumperz, and New Zealanders Leon Meier and Lysandra Zheng, won the mini-Spingold at the recent Summer NABC in Minneapolis. This hand appeared in the event's daily bulletin (15 July 2026, editors Paul Linxwiler, Chip Dombrowski and Amy Casanova).
This deal from the first session of the Spingold Knockout Teams was reported by Max Schireson, playing on the Gitelman team (Fred Gitelman, Sheri Winestock, Max Schireson, Christal Henner, Debbie Rosenberg, Uday Ivatury) vs des Jardins (David des Jardins, Andrew Gumperz, Leon Meier, Lysandra Zheng).
Schireson was impressed with Zheng’s defense on Board 30.

West led the {K. East overtook with the ace and switched to a low spade! “When I didn’t put up the [Q, I lost three spade tricks plus the {A for down one,” said Schireson.
On a more routine defense, such as continuing diamonds or leading a trump, once declarer discovers the ]Q in the West hand, it will be easier to place the [AK with East.
“Overtaking the diamond to play a low spade isn’t the only way I can go wrong,” Schireson continued. “If West is left on lead and switches to a spade and a spade is continued, I also have a chance to go wrong.
“But they must make me play spades immediately, and the way East can guarantee that is to play exactly as she did. A club switch through dummy’s king might look attractive to West, but that would be fatal, as would a trump or a second diamond.”
