2023 Australia-Wide Restricted Pairs
Your Personal Results Booklet with Brad Coles
Thea,
Welcome to your personal results analysis booklet for the 2023 Australia-Wide Restricted Pairs.
You will have already received your first booklet on the day of the event – an instructional booklet with advice on how to bid and play the hands. This is your second booklet, looking at the actual results from around Australia.
All of the participating clubs have submitted their travelling scoreslips, and the event has been scored across the field. With over 400 tables submitted for each board, and more than 12000 boards played overall, this is your chance to directly compare your results with players from all over the country, board by board.
For each board we have displayed a full national travelling scoreslip, plus a summary of the most common contracts and results, with some additional comments about the final results. The summary also shows your own result, and also the results of one of the top ranked pairs. This way you can see exactly what you needed to do if you wanted to win the event!
This booklet also contains the list of the top 436 pairs in the event, on pages 38-42.
The top five pairs are:
1. Martin Wu & Peter Munro Arana
2. Marlies Maussen & Stephen Vigh Ingham
3. Tim Freeman & Farzin Meshki Birkdale
4. Patricia Greaves & Ken Haines Gawler
5. Paul Acfield & Graham Stucley Glenelg
Best NSW/ACT: Sandy Carter & Nerida Gillies Peninsula
Best VIC/TAS: Erica McCoull & Jeremy Reid Tasmania
Best WA: Robert Wall & Max Gerber Bayswater

NS winners' result: 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)x-E, NS100 (NS 83%)

Comments:
The most popular contract was 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), with most people losing two diamond tricks (or one diamond and a ruff) to go one down. On a non diamond lead, you can make 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) by drawing trumps and playing a diamond to the king (losing to the ace). When you see East show out, you can finesse the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)7 on the next round of the suit.
Most EW pairs who reached 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) made it easily enough. A few NS pairs bid on to 5images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), which scores 65% for one off or 50% for two off – much better than defending 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) (scoring just 18%).
Book prizes for bidding 5images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) go to Sue Kinnear and Louise Strauss of KLTC and Peter Fagan and Elizabeth Kelly of Cowra.

Jack's auction from the souvenir booklet:

Jack's result: 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)-W, NS50
Your result: 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)-N down 3, EW300 (NS 4%)
NS winners' result: 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)-W, NS50 (NS 56%)

Comments:
Very few Souths were allowed to play in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), which was worth 87%. Most tables probably reproduced our example auction, with the majority of EW pairs going at least one off in 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), and this was also above average for NS.
To get a good share of the matchpoints, EW need to get a plus score, which requires an error from NS. You need them to either bid on to 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) (going down) or you need them to misdefend 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes). If West leads a heart towards the queen and North jumps in with the king, that will be North's only heart trick, and 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) will make; if he plays second-hand low, holding on to his king until it can capture West's jack, he will take two heart tricks for one off.
Honours are for capturing honours; don't waste them on low cards if it can be avoided.

Comments:
Not surprisingly, there were few EW pairs taking the push to 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) over 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). This is probably smart, as (in theory) 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) could have been doubled for -200, and 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) might have been going down.
However, there were also many pairs who sold out to 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), and that's a poor strategy. When you have an eight-card spade fit, it's rarely a good idea to defend at the two-level. When EW competed to 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), many of them were permitted to play there for a nice 84% score. A few others also scored well when NS kicked on to 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) and went down (after misguessing the clubs).
Declarer should get clubs right. Given East opened and West failed to respond, it makes sense to play East for the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A and West for the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)Q.

Comments:
The field were more aggressive than expected in the bidding, with 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) being the popular contract. Unfortunately, making it was a difficult task, with many pairs losing a club, maybe a diamond, and two or three trumps. With a combined 23 HCP and no good fit, there's really no excuse to be in game. 23-point games are for hands with useful ruffing values, or a nice suit that will be a source of tricks.
I'm fairly sure that the correct way to play this heart suit is to cash the ace, and then lead towards the jack after the queen falls. The correct (but losing) play in diamonds is to play North for the queen – he has opened the bidding (so he has more points), and he has a heart shortage (so he is likely to hold most of the diamonds).
Book prizes for making game go to Janice Pearson and Julie Scanlan of Camden Haven and Jeanette Rayward and Ray Peirce of Great Lakes.

Comments:
This game is 24 HCP, but it has a ruffing value, some potentially useful spades, and good heart pips (imagine how much easier the previous deal would have been if West had held the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)10 and images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)9 instead of the defenders having them). All in all, this 24-count is much better than Board 4's lacklustre 23-count.
There were a lot of pairs in 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), presumably after the auction 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)-2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). I'm not averse to the occasional 10-point single raise at Matchpoints, but this is not the right hand for such timidity. With two aces and a shortage, there is no reason to take a conservative view of this 10-count.
Most Wests made ten tricks, so nice work there.

Comments:
The popular spot here was 3NT, and a large majority managed to make it. If you did that by using a triple hold-up play in diamonds, as suggested in the souvenir booklet, that's extremely impressive. If you did it thanks to a misdefence, with the defenders failing to find their diamond tricks, that's fine too – the score is the same either way (just 60%, because it's not the best contract).
4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) is an easier way to make a living, and it also happens to score better, with 77% for the contract and 92% for the overtrick.

Comments:
The popular spot was 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), hopefully after a 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) opening from North. It's really tough for either opponent to get into the auction over such a high preempt, and the pairs that did get in were unable to stop at the four-level.
The given auction to 4images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) was actually more good luck than good management, but aggressive bidders make their own luck. This is demonstrated by the fact that even the EW pairs in 5images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) did very well: going down in 5images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) was worth 63% for EW, while defending 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) would have earned just 34%.
EW also did well when they pushed NS to the four-level; beating 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) was worth 75% for EW.

Comments:
Our first big hand of the set, with both pairs belonging at the five-level. Nevertheless, the most popular contract by some margin was just 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), with EW not appreciating the value of their ten-card spade fit. While there are occasional exceptions, in general you should be at the four-level when you have a ten-card fit.
This is even more true if the opponents have a ten-card fit as well! As we can see here, both sides can make game, and bidding 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) would have been right even if it had been going two off.
As the cards lie, it is also correct for NS to sacrifice over 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), and it is then also right for EW to save over 5images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). That's what happens when both sides have a big fit with a void in the opponents' suit.

Comments:
The popular spot was 1NT, of course, but there were a large number of pairs in 2NT. There are a couple of possible explanations for this, the most likely being a 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) response from North. There is a reason that North is supposed to respond 1NT with all 6-9 hands – if you want to force to the two-level and probably higher, you need to have enough points to back it up.
If you're thinking, "North is a passed hand, so 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) isn't forcing," then you're right. As a passed hand, North is entitled to be a bit light for his 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) bid, as partner is allowed to pass it. And that would have worked out fine if South had actually passed 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), but the results suggest that most Souths continued bidding, not recognising that passing was an option. 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) would have been a fine spot.

Comments:
About a third of the game bidders chose 3NT here, which is not a great idea with a four-four major fit. When both hands are balanced it is sometimes right to play in 3NT rather than a major, but this usually applies to a 5-3 fit. It's not often correct to ignore a 4-4 major fit, and even less so when both partners have a clear ruffing value.
Playing in notrumps, you can take three heart tricks on this deal. Playing in hearts, on perfect play, you can take six heart tricks! You can take the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)AK, ruff two spades in dummy with the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)6 and images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)9, and ruff two clubs in hand with the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)8 and images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)10. That's an expert level of play, but you only need one extra heart trick to make 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) the better contract.

Comments:
In complete contrast to the previous deal, here we have a case where ignoring the major-suit fit is the winning move. Unlike Board 10, here both North and South have balanced hands. Neither hand can make any extra tricks from ruffing; declarer will take the same four spade tricks (on a friendly break) in 3NT as he would in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). This is often true when a 5332 hand faces a 4333 hand, particularly when all of the side-suits are well-stopped.
This is all just theory; in practice, most defenders failed to find their four defensive tricks against 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), giving declarer a tenth trick with the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)10 or images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K.

Comments:
You don't often see a board where the results are spread so evenly across seven different contracts. By the slightest of margins, the most popular spot (at the time of writing) was 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) by NS, with EW not finding a way into the auction. A lot of Souths passed their partner's 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) opening; probably not a winning move in the long-run, but by no means a terrible decision.
The most convenient path into the auction for EW is a 2images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) overcall on the first round. East's hand is a long long way from a textbook two-level overcall, but I still recommend it, with the safety of being non-vulnerable. The harsh reality of Matchpoint bridge: if you have an opportunity to get involved, you need to take it before it's too late.

Comments:
A lot of Wests got in with the poor vulnerable 1NT overcall here, and many of them paid the price with a score of -200 or worse. None of them were doubled, which is surprising when South has such a strong hand. On the previous board, I said that it is important to get into the auction when you have an opportunity; the corollary of this is that you need to teach your opponents a lesson when they choose the wrong moment to stick their neck out.
West's 1NT scored a healthy 56% for one off, but it would have been just 8% if he'd been doubled for -200. I'm all in favour of an aggressive approach when you aren't vulnerable, but vulnerability should be respected. It's important for both sides to appreciate the enormous difference between 100 and 200.

Comments:
Many Norths passed their partner's 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) opening with their 4 HCP, which is a normal and reasonable decision. Not so reasonable is EW's decision to let it end there.
Making 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) was a trivial exercise for South, scoring 72% for +80, with the majority getting away with an overtrick for 88%. Meanwhile EW can make 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), and have -50 available in any contract of their choice. In practice, most Wests in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) managed to make it, as the killing defence is quite hard to find (South needs to find three correct plays to beat it legitimately).
West's failure to bid 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was a serious error, but North's pass of 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) gave East a cheap opportunity to come to the rescue. It's a shame that so few Easts took advantage of that chance.

Comments:
The usual spot here was 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), with EW once again failing to take advantage of the favourable vulnerability. If West overcalls 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), East will surely raise to 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), and this will take at least nine tricks – you can actually take ten with some good guessing, and several pairs did this. Defending 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) for -650 was worth a remarkable 6% for EW (or 14% for -620, with several declarers not recognising the need to set up dummy's long diamond suit for an 11th trick). When opponents drop a trick in the play and you still only score 14%, you really need to take a look at your bidding!
At those tables where EW did compete to 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), NS had a nasty decision whether to give up, double, or bid on to 5images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). In nearly all cases they chose to give up, accepting +50 or +100 for a below average score. Bidding on to 5images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) is hard to do, and if you do take that route, you'd better remember to set up that diamond trick.

Comments:
Even at unfavourable vulnerability, it seems clear for West to get to 5images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) on this hand. In order to make it, you'll need to find partner with a black-suit trick, but even if you don't make it, I'm sure you'd rather be there than defending a heart contract. Many pairs did sell out to 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) for 27%; some of them at least doubled it, getting an extra 50 for 43%. Those who sold out to 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) got nothing.
In 5images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), it's important to play the clubs by cashing the king and then the ace. When you see North show out, now you can finesse against South's jack. If you suspected that South was the one with short clubs, you would do it the other way: cash the king-queen to see if South shows out. Here, the bidding and the diamond layout indicate that if anyone has a club shortage, it will be North.

Comments:
Nearly all NS pairs bought the contract at the two-level, suggesting that either East or West dropped the ball. West's hand does not meet the standard requirements for a two-level overcall (for example, Ron Klinger's rule of overcalls says that you need either an extra heart or an extra honour). I wouldn't dream of bidding 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) if vulnerable, but those green lines on the bidding diagram are a clear go-signal. Many good players would bid 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) when not vul.
Even with the 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) overcall, it's still very hard to avoid defending 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), and those who managed to bid on were very well-rewarded. At many tables NS did the best they could by pushing on to 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), where they went one off – a below-average score, but not as bad as defending 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes).

Comments:
The popular spot was 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), but we have no way of knowing whether East opened that bid, or reached that spot by any of the various other reasonable routes. With a good chance of taking seven tricks in your own hand, at this vulnerability you certainly don't want to defend anything below 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), so it makes sense to just open it and get it over with. The sooner you bid it, the less likely you are to be doubled.
As is the norm in most club events, no one is doubling 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), but NS received a modest but satisfactory reward for two off and just +100. However, more than half of the tables let one of their six certain tricks get away, for +50 and a poor matchpoint score. Maybe I'm having a blind spot, but it's not clear to me where the sixth trick went – maybe North cashed the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)AK at some point and crashed South's queen.
Book prizes for doubling 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) go to Phil Dempster and Bev Cooke of Cairns and Sid Roatch and Judith Gibson of West Coast.

Comments:
No one is playing in spades, thankfully. Maybe that's because West was smart enough to stay quiet at this vulnerability, or maybe it's because NS chose to ignore the intervention and just bid the game.
Despite the 26 HCP, most declarers went down in 3NT. Once the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)10 makes a generous appearance on the first round of the suit, you are already up to eight tricks, with three hearts, the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A, and AK-AK in the minors. So you only need one more trick for the contract, and there's a good chance that the opponents will give it to you on their own (by leading a diamond from the queen, or cashing high spades, or leading top clubs). If not, you'll need to pay attention to see what suit West discards, and hope to set up a trick in that suit.

Comments:
For at least the third time in this set, the dealer had a preemptive opening, and neither opponent was able to find a bid over it. 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) is unbeatable, but the defenders will actually get an above-average score if they manage to hold it to eight tricks. This will require either a diamond lead at trick one, or a switch to diamonds after winning the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)A. Looking at dummy's strong clubs, it should be clear to North that the diamonds have to be taken quickly before they run away. Declarer has no control over the result; he is at the mercy of North's decision.
If NS can find a way into the auction, they should get out for -100 at worst in 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) or 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), which is a great matchpoint score. Some pairs even made 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), when the defenders failed to start with an attacking defence of three rounds of spades.

Comments:
A reasonably even split between 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) and 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), which is about what you would expect. West has a very close decision whether to raise to 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes); if he does raise, I think East should pass it, but some people will bid on. There will also be some Wests who just go straight to game themselves.
To re-quote my own comment from Board 4: "23-point games are for hands with useful ruffing values, or a nice suit that will be a source of tricks." West does in fact have a possible source of tricks in the spade suit, but he's also a bit low on entries. We can actually make eleven tricks if we guess both major-suit queens, but it's no surprise that the majority of declarers are failing to make ten tricks.

Comments:
NS got away with something here, playing in a making 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) contract while the opponents can make nine tricks in either minor. It's hard to beat 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes); the winning defence is to play three rounds of diamonds (West ruffing), then the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K, images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A and a fourth diamond. Expert-level defence.
It's hard for either player to find a bid over 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), especially vulnerable, so I don't blame EW for failing to get into this auction.
At the tables where EW did get in with 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) or 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), NS just pushed on to 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), which is a bit undisciplined with two balanced hands and only eight trumps. Balanced hands are generally better off defending, especially if the bidding is already at the three-level. The "Deep Finesse" analysis says that one or two off in 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) is better than defending a making 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes); in reality, most pairs in 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) were going down, so 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was not a good score.

Comments:
Most pairs were in 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) rather than 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), which I think was a wise decision. I did say on Board 8 that when you have ten trumps you should usually go to the four-level, but this deal is one of the rare exceptions. Both hands are balanced, which argues against competing at high levels, and despite the big fit there are no ruffing values at all.
And of course we are vulnerable – it's quite possible that 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) might be one off, while the opponents have no game (we both have heart length, after all). People aren't shy about doubling 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) contracts, so -200 is a real risk.
On the actual deal, 4images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) is the limit for NS, but most EW pairs in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) were not doubled. Some of them escaped for one off, scoring -100 and 51%, but if they had been doubled it would have been -200 and just 5%. A reminder to not let the opponents walk all over you when you have the balance of the points. You are allowed to be aggressive; the opponents have no such rights. If they step over the line, teach them a lesson and get that 200.

Comments:
Most pairs are in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), but there are a decent number in 5images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), indicating that NS managed to make a nuisance of themselves by bidding 5images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes). This leaves NS with the familiar pass-double-bid trilemma. About a third of them chose to defend 5images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) (and about half of those doubled it for the extra 50 points – nice work) but the majority made the winning decision to go on to 5images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes).
There is a common phrase, "the five-level belongs to the opponents" which means that when the opponents are at the five-level, you shouldn't bid over them. It's sound advice – it's usually wrong to bid five over five – but when both sides have huge fits, such as Board 8 and this one, you're allowed to make an exception. Don't make a habit of it; spotting these exceptions is one of the hardest parts of the game, and it's wrong more than right.

Comments:
In the souvenir booklet, I wrote that it was hard to imagine anyone not playing this board in 1NT. True, most of the field did play there, but there were some tiny factions in 2NT, 3NT, all levels of clubs (including six who passed 1images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)), 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), and several pairs defending a heart contract.
The most remarkable result, however, was a couple of pairs who played 1NT by EW. I don't know how they got there, but it's always good to be the first pair to reach 1NT, because 1NT is a hard contract to defend, and declarer sometimes picks up a free trick or two. Here, both EW declarers took eight tricks instead of the six to which they were entitled, for a 96% score. Even seven tricks would have been worth 86%.

Comments:
There seem to be a number of recurring themes in this set of boards, and this hand deal is quite similar to Board 3, with many NS pairs playing in 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) while EW should be in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). I'll just repeat the same advice from that board: when you have an eight-card spade fit, it's rarely a good idea to defend at the two-level. There's a reasonable chance that both sides can make a contract.
On this board, that is not the case, but even when 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) goes one off, it is still better than defending 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). In practice, many EW pairs were permitted to make 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) when NS failed to find their diamond ruff. Making 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was worth 89% for EW, while going one off was 59%.
Defending 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) was worth just 42%, and again many pairs misdefended, failing to get West's images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)K before it ran away on dummy's clubs, ending with just 24%.

Comments:
The popular spot here was 3NT, which allows me to repeat my advice from Board 4 and Board 21: 23-point games require ruffing values or a source of tricks. West's long suit is not much use, and his doubleton images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)QJ might be completely worthless. East's 12-count is quite attractive for a balanced hand – the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)J is actually worth a full trick on its own – but even this is not enough to compensate for the total lack of help provided by West's awful hand.
I can't think of any auction that would lead either player to think that there are 25 HCP present in the combined hands. I can understand getting to 2NT if West opens the bidding, but there is no reason at all to be in game.
Playing in the normal 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) contract was worth 67% to EW.

Comments:
EW did very well on this deal, with most pairs refusing to let the opponents play in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). After competing to 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), many pairs were allowed to play there, where they usually made nine tricks for an 84% score. Quite a few tables lost a second diamond trick, which is understandable – they went one off, but this was still an average score.
However, the long-term value in competing comes from pushing the opponents up a level. Here, most NS pairs did push on to 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). Quite a few of them made it, so EW had nothing to show for their hard work, but you have to keep giving your opponents these problems. You won't get anywhere by meekly defending 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) all the time. Make them play at the three-level as often as possible.

Comments:
This one is a reflection of Board 9, and once again there are too many people in 2NT. In this case it's more understandable, though. With 10 HCP, there will surely be a lot of Souths responding 2images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), over which North will likely rebid 2NT. That is a very normal auction, but most experienced pairs have learned to avoid the two-level on hands like this. All experts respond 1NT with this South hand.
Having said that, 2NT is a fairly easy make, so no harm was done by getting to the two-level. But it's still better to not give yourself this kind of stress if you can help it. Contracts like 2NT, 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) and 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) are all risk and no upside, and should be avoided whenever possible. 2NT making eight tricks scores the same as 1NT making eight tricks, but 2NT making seven was a near-bottom board.

Jack's result: 3NT-W, EW430
Your result: 3NT-W down 1, NS50 (NS 89%)
Winners' result: Not played

Comments:
Most pairs played in 3NT, and most of those managed to find ten tricks. It's actually not so much a case of finding ten tricks; rather, the defenders have the problem of not being able to find more than three (the top clubs and one heart). After NS run out of tricks, declarer is more or less forced to take the remainder.
At the tables where declarer lost four tricks, they must have lost a second heart (cashing the ace and setting up the defenders king and queen) or lost a diamond (failing to take the diamond finesse).

Comments:
The auction in the souvenir booklet, from when Jack bid the hands, ended in 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). I'm not too surprised that the human players failed to reproduce that auction, as East has a fairly nice ten-count and will normally respond to 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). But what should you respond? 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) and 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) are the obvious candidates.
For most partnerships, a 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) response would be forcing, and if you choose 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) it may be hard to get back to diamonds later. Yet many pairs did manage to play in 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes).
There's no way of knowing how they got there, but 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) is a great spot (and 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) is also excellent). Half of the declarers managed to take all of their tricks, ruffing out dummy's heart suit to take five trumps, two spades and three heart tricks, for 130 and 78%.

Comments:
Whether in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) or 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), most pairs only made nine tricks on this board, with a very unfriendly layout of the cards. Presumably people were taking the heart finesse, losing a trick to the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)K as well as the obvious losers.
Despite the awful trump position, it is possible to make ten tricks here, losing just the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)KJ and the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A. Declarer's heart losers can be thrown on clubs, and the diamonds can be ruffed in dummy (or also thrown on clubs, depending on how the play goes). West will ruff the third club, and probably the fourth club, but he will be ruffing with natural trump tricks.
Making game was worth 88% for NS.
