2022 Australia-Wide Novice Pairs
Your Personal Results Booklet
David,
Welcome to your personal results analysis booklet for the 2022 Australia-Wide Novice Pairs.
You will have already received your first booklet on the day of the event -- an instructional booklet with advice on how to bid and play the hands. This is your second booklet, looking at the actual results from around Australia.
Nearly all of the participating clubs have submitted their travelling scoreslips, and the event has been scored across the field. With over 500 tables submitted for each board, and over 15000 boards played overall, this is your chance to directly compare your results with players from all over the country, board by board.
For each board we have displayed a full national travelling scoreslip, plus a summary of the most common contracts and results, with some additional comments about the final results. The summary also shows your own result, and also the results of one of the top ranked pairs. This way you can see exactly what you needed to do if you wanted to win the event!
This booklet also contains the list of the top 660 pairs in the event, on pages 38-43.
The top five pairs are:
1. Martin Wu & Lilly Jia Sunnybank
2. Jill & John Littlewood Goondiwindi
3. Richard Wix & Mary Cruickshank Mackay
4. Norm & Linda Hoskin Bunbury
5. Betty Collins & Joan Aranas Ingham
Best under-50 (and under-25): Norm & Linda Hoskin Bunbury
Best under-10: Elizabeth Moran & Helen Klieve QCBC
Best NSW: Margi Bargwanna & Marie Langfield Cowra
Best Vic/Tas: Stephanie McQueen & Kevin Fagan Launceston
Best SA/NT: Alexandra Wilson & Luke Black Darwin

Your result: 1NT-W, EW90 (EW 67%)
EW winners' result: 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)-W, NS50 (EW 26%)

Comments:
The most popular result on this board was 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), as you might expect. There were so many pairs in 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) that +80 was only worth 50% to EW (82% if they made an overtrick).
If NS managed to get into the auction, they usually scored -50, bumping up NS's score to 67%. Some did even better when EW pushed on to 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) and went down.

Comments:
Once again the opening bid was passed out at many tables, and again this turned out to be an average board. At most tables, though, NS did manage to get into the auction, and making 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was a big score for NS.
At some tables EW bid on to 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), refusing to defend 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes). This was a small improvement to EW's score, but (just like on the previous board) the jackpot came when NS bid on 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) and went down. A plus score defending a vulnerable 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was worth 66% to EW.

Comments:
Many EW pairs managed to stop in 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) on this deal, for a great score. Even the pairs who went down still scored 50%. The contract should always make, though, as you have only four losers (images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A, images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)K and the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)AJ). Or, to look at it in terms of winners, you have nine certain tricks: five clubs, two aces, and two hearts (after knocking out North's images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)A and images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)J).
There are communication difficulties, but as long as declarer persists in setting up two heart tricks, he will usually find himself with nine tricks in the end (barring superhuman defence).
Book prizes for 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) go to Greg Sheridan and Murray Scholz of Albury and Gloria Newton and Anne Gardiner of Kenmore.

Comments:
Most tables played this board in 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), duplicating Jack's auction. The result was decided in the card play, with many pairs going down (for a 27% score) and many others making an overtrick (for an 81% score). Making eight tricks was an average board.
From declarer's point of view, making the contract depends on guessing the club suit. No doubt many North players helped declarer by rising with the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A on the first round. The pairs who made an overtrick can probably also thank the defenders, who must have given them a free spade trick.
Book prizes for 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) go to Bev Holden and Les Geczy of Maitland and Jennifer Blacke and Celia Eastman of Port Macquarie.

Comments:
This turned out to be the 2nd-flattest board of the event, indicating that most players are familiar with the technique of adding shortage points. Just a few pairs underbid the hand to 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes).
Quite a few EW pairs blocked the diamond suit and let one of their diamond winners get away. If West fails to take the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A early, by the time he does win it he may find himself on lead with only clubs left, and may have to give up a "ruff-and-discard".

Comments:
Most pairs were in 3NT here, so the scores depended mostly on defence. I assume that most tables has an auction that indicated a major-suit lead, and of the two majors South has a normal heart lead (a spade is too likely to give up a trick). A helpful North might even throw in a weak jump overcall at this vulnerability, to help South find the best lead.
3NT can always be made by a very precise series of plays that would be outside the abilities of many experienced tournament players. On an average line of declarer play, 3NT will go down if South always leads hearts and North always leads spades.

Comments:
In the souvenir booklet I mentioned that some EW pairs might get shut out of the auction if North bids quickly to 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes). That did turn out to be the case, and 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) was worth 81% to NS (but just 49% if you didn't manage to make it). On careful play, you should just lose images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)AK and two trumps.
Depending on how the auction went, West should probably compete over 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) (with a takeout double) if East does not bid. If East does bid, then of course it is easy for West to simply support the spades.
Book prizes for 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) go to Ian Hanmer and Ben Wyatt of Moonee Valley and Ann Barron and Judy Vigh of Ingham.

Comments:
Despite Jack's ugly auction to 2NT, most pairs in this event managed to reach a sensible 1NT. Nice work. Of course, most of these pairs did make eight tricks anyway, but in the long run you'll appreciate being at the one-level on hands like this. And there were 37 pairs who only made 7 tricks in 1NT – this was already a poor score (31%) but it would have been far worse if the contract had been 2NT.
In defence, EW only have the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A, images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A and three heart tricks, with no other real prospects (at some tables, the defenders did not get them all in time). As long as declarer doesn't cash diamonds too early, allowing East to score the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)8, 2NT should score lots of black tricks for at least +120.

Comments:
The majority were in game on this hand, and that is too high with 11 opposite 11 HCP (don't count West's images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)J). Possibly some Wests added three points for the shortage, which is fine – the real problem on the hand is that East's 11-count is mostly junk.
While we normally give 2 points for a queen and 1 point for a jack, in reality this is too generous. We use this point count because it's simple – no one would use a point count method where cards have fractional values. But in general, you should be aware that hands with a lot of queens and jacks (quacks) might not perform as well as expected.
I would admire a partner who had the courage to defy textbooks and bid just 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) on the East hand.
Book prizes for a unique top go to Philip Powell and Karen Sivyer of Denmark.

Comments:
A good instructive board for the many pairs who played this hand in 2images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) or 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) – if you take away only one thing from today's play, you should have a discussion about your bidding on this hand.
Having said that, quite a few pairs failed to take a 2nd club trick and went down in 3NT. The play goes like this:
Lead the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)3 from dummy. North will probably grab his images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K, or at least have a bit of a think about it. If he does, you can win your images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)Q. However, if North shows no visible sign of having the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K, play the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)10 instead (finessing against the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J). If this forces South to play the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K, you're good. When this finesse loses (here, South wins the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J) then you can still try to finesse South for the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K later.

Comments:
A lot of pairs in 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) here, which I guess means East did not make a bid. This is quite pessimistic opposite a partner who is bidding at the three-level. Look at it this way: West thinks he can make 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) not knowing you have any points at all. He is certainly hoping that you have something useful, but he can never guess that you have almost an opening hand (and a stopper in South's suit).
Most Souths led a high heart against 3NT, instead of a small one, and now 3NT could not be beaten. Pull the heart suit out of a deck of cards and play around with this suit to see all the different ways that the play might have gone. It's a useful suit combination to remember.
Book prizes for the low heart lead go to Marilyn Bidey and Di Court of Gold Coast and Dianne McColl and Jan Kinross of Redcliffe.

Comments:
This board will be a big success for players who know how to count cards. East led the singleton diamond, picking up West's images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)Q, and declarer drew three rounds of trumps and cashed another diamond. When East showed out in both red suits, declarer knew East had started with ten black cards, so he played him to be 5-5. He cashed the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)AK, dropping West's doubleton images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)Q, and then took a ruffing finesse against the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J.
Once Jack knew that East had ten black cards, he actually had even better ways to make 12 tricks. However, he would have gone down if West had been the one with the long clubs. Attempting to ruff two clubs is a simple and high-percentage play, that happened to fail on this occasion.

Comments:
Most people are in 3NT here, with a lot of matchpoints swinging on whether you made 10 or 11 tricks. If you could see all the cards, you would simply finesse against South's images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)J, and just lose the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A, images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)K and images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J. However, if you can't see all the cards, you will probably try the diamond finesse instead, which is less fortunate.
Almost every North led a heart, letting dummy win the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)J – a great start for declarer. First step is to knock out the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J to get your clubs going, and when South wins the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J the board is in his hands. If South is counting declarer's points, he may determine that there is just enough room for North to hold the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)K, so he will probably lead a spade here. Now declarer can try putting in the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)10 to see if it wins. It does, and now ten tricks are fairly easy.

Comments:
A return to the fierce partscore battle that we saw at the start of the day. EW can make 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) or 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), and NS can make 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes). However, amusingly, the first suit into the auction was diamonds, so none of those three contracts saw the light of day.
Most NS pairs just bid and raised the diamonds, and that was the end of it. At any table where EW did manage to get into the auction, another diamond bid from North silenced them. In most cases North was allowed to make 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), for a fine score (EW need to find a club ruff quickly to salvage some matchpoints).
Any EW pair who did play in 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)/2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was rewarded with a top board.

Comments:
With a combined 24 HCP and two balanced hands, this is not a great game, and the majority did not bid it. With many pairs taking only nine tricks, making ten tricks in a partscore was quite enough for a good score.
There's not much to the play: if you guess who has the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)Q you make 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), if you don't then you go down. The recommended play is to cash the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A (just in case East has the singleton images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)Q) and then running the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)J through West. You also need to hope that the defenders can't take two quick diamond tricks.
Pairs in 3NT scored a nice bonus, with the extra ten points on your score translating to an extra 10% of the matchpoints.

Comments:
After the bidding reaches 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), there's no reason why anyone should bid again. You've found your fit and no one has any extra values. The pairs in 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) are doing too much bidding.
There were quite a few pairs in 1NT. About a third of those are from WA, where many people open 1NT with 12-14 instead of 15-17, but that doesn't explain why so many East coast pairs are in that contract.
There are two key decisions in the card play: South must play second hand low if a club is led towards the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)Q, and declarer must decide whether to let the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)10 run on the first round of trumps.
Book prizes for a unique top go to Glenice Riley and Pauline Haydon of Central Coast for making 3NT.

Comments:
Once again the field has stopped short of a close game, and again NS receive a fine score for making ten tricks in the partscore. In fact, there was only 19% difference between bidding the game and not bidding it – with those odds, it's definitely right to not bid it.
With a limited number of entries to dummy, there are several ways to play the hand: you can use your two entries for two spade finesses, or you can use one of them for a diamond finesse (giving you a diamond re-entry for another spade finesse). As the cards lie, it actually doesn't even matter which finesses you choose – only the first spade finesse is essential.

Comments:
The players did not have nearly as much trouble as Jack, who went three off in 3NT on this hand. Human players preferred the laydown 5images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes), with just a few stragglers in 4images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) or 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes).
There's not much to say about the hand... in theory declarer can make 12 (if East doesn't take the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A quickly enough) by finessing against the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)J. That would be a risky play, based on the fact that a hand with no diamonds is more likely to have four hearts than three. If you do go for the overtrick, it's worth an extra 22% of the matchpoints.
NS had a profitable sacrifice in 5images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), but I wouldn't recommend making a habit of such things. If you managed to buy it in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), that's a fantastic result.

Comments:
There are several ways to take 12 tricks on this deal, but setting up club tricks is the simplest.
A more complicated (but possibly safer) alternative is to throw a heart on the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A, take the heart finesse, and try to ruff a heart and a diamond in dummy. I'll leave it to any mathematicians in the room to determine which line gives you the better chance.
In practice, 11 tricks was the most common result, followed by ten tricks. The reason: probably drawing trumps too soon, when you have losers to ruff. To be fair, it's quite easy to overlook the possibility of ruffing a heart on this deal!

Comments:
The most popular result here was 2images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), a result that I anticipated in the souvenir booklet. When South makes a takeout double, North is forced to respond – even with no points at all. When South hears the 2images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) response, he expects a weak hand, and has no reason to bid again.
If we are to reach a game, North needs to take the initiative. A jump to 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) will send a gentle message: "I'm prepared to go higher if you like."
Another option, of course, is the scary "penalty pass". We tell you that you must respond to a takeout double, but when you have a trump stack and actually want to defend 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), it's ok to pass. Defending 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) doubled hits the jackpot here.

Comments:
At most tables the auction ended at 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), but East can't be too happy with his decision to defend that contract (assuming his partner has made a takeout double, which seems likely). 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) scores 67% just for making (86% for an overtrick, and 95% if you play perfectly).
Bidding 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) has a good chance of making – some pairs even made an overtrick, for an 85% score to EW. NS will probably ignore you and bid on to 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), but at least in 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) you have a better chance of beating them – there were a lot of declarers who only made eight tricks (presumably by failing to take the trump finesse).

Comments:
Hundreds of pairs made 12 tricks – still a good solid score in 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), so there was no need to bid the slam. I received an email from an expert (I don't know why he was reading the Novice booklet) objecting to my description of 6images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) as a poor slam. He said that once South has bid 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), marking the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A as being onside, it's actually a great slam. Of course, I'm sure that most tables did not actually overcall 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), so my original statement stands!
He also objected to my recommended line of play (ruffing four diamonds in dummy, a line that assumes the defenders are not drawing trumps). He recommended ruffing clubs, to establish a long club trick. This line will also produce 12 tricks on this layout, even if the defenders do draw trumps.

EW winners' result: 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)-W, EW650 (EW 69%)

Comments:
This looks like it was the flattest board of the day (possibly the flattest board ever) with nearly 300 pairs getting the same score. Even so, that still left over 100 pairs who found the diamond ruff to hold 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) to ten tricks. It's a huge difference: preventing that overtrick reduced NS's score from 69% all the way to 29%.
There were allegedly a few pairs who scored twelve tricks, but I have no explanation for that!

Comments:
There were a lot of pairs in 4NT on this deal, and you should be proud of that. It means (a) you knew that 4NT in this auction is invitational, not Blackwood; (b) you trusted your partner to also know that; and (c) your partner did know.
With a useful-looking five-card suit, I would have accepted the invitation to 6NT. In the souvenir booklet I mentioned some small changes that you could make, that would see 6NT make. To that list I will now add, moving South's images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)Q or images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)Q into the club suit. There are many hands that South could have held that would make 6NT a decent spot.
