2021 Australia-Wide Novice Pairs
Your Personal Results Booklet
Gillian,
Welcome to your personal results analysis booklet for the 2021 Australia-Wide Novice Pairs.
You will have already received your first booklet on the day of the event -- an instructional booklet with advice on how to bid and play the hands. This is your second booklet, looking at the actual results from around Australia.
About 80 of the participating clubs have submitted their travelling scoreslips, and the event has been scored across the field. With nearly 500 tables submitted for each board, and over 13000 boards played overall, this is your chance to directly compare your results with players from all over the country, board by board.
For each board we have displayed a full national travelling scoreslip, plus a summary of the most common contracts and results, with some additional comments about the final results. The summary also shows your own result, and also the results of one of the top ranked pairs. This way you can see exactly what you needed to do if you wanted to win the event!
This booklet also contains the list of the top 660 pairs in the event, on pages 38-43.
The top five pairs are:
1. Kevin Stojko & Ray Cockshell Gawler
2. Phil Thomas & David Purkiss Central Coast
3. Gayle Calvert & Steve English Sydney
4. Susie Keur & Les Sinclair Nambucca Valley
5. Dianne Cass & Brian Goldman Maitland
Best under-50: Martin Wu & Lilly Jia Sunnybank
Best QLD: Coleen Evanson & Anne Murphy Townsville
Best Vic/Tas: Carolyn Clark & Gina Copeland KLTC
Best WA: Peter Walczak & Jeanne Walczak Swan

Comments:
The second-most popular contract here was 5NT. This odd contract happens when North is confident enough to respond to a 4NT ace-ask, but starts to doubt himself when faced with a 5NT king-ask. South shouldn't actually be bidding 5NT anyway – he was always intending to bid 6NT, no matter how many kings North showed.
In fact, 4NT is best played as invitational over 1NT, and there is an article on that topic in Will's Workshop in this month's ABF Newsletter.
Everyone led the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)K against 3NT or 6NT (well done) but many Wests failed to continue hearts after winning the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A, so 6NT often made.
Book prizes for making 6images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) go to Jenny Green and Patricia Hoson of Rockingham, and Martin Wu and Lilly Jia of Sunnybank.

Comments:
Most Souths led a club against 3NT, split fairly evenly between the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J, images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)8 and images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)7. Thanks to partner holding the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)9, it didn't actually matter which card you chose, but images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J is recommended. images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J108 is strong enough to be treated as a sequence lead.
Declarer wins the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)J with the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)Q, but should lose four club tricks as soon as North gets on lead. However, as on the previous board, many North players failed to return their partner's suit when they got on lead with the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)K.

Comments:
Most pairs reached the heart game, possibly in an uncontested auction, but fewer than half of the declarers were successful. It's a tricky one to play, and the first step is to count your tricks: two hearts, five clubs, and two aces. A spade to the queen is the most attractive play for a tenth trick (especially if South made a helpful 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) overcall) and you should do that as soon as possible, before you lose trump control.
It's very tempting to draw trumps straight away, as you'll always have ten tricks on a 3-2 break, so I won't criticise anyone who did that and went down. Especially on a club lead, it might have been right to draw trumps quickly in fear of a club ruff.

Comments:
The key decision in 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) is for West to recognise that after he plays a trump, the defenders will be able to cash three heart tricks (because dummy will have no trumps left). For this reason, declarer's first priority is to play three rounds of diamonds, throwing a heart loser, before playing on trumps.
At the table, North usually led a heart (thanks to South's 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) overcall) but South abandoned the suit after two rounds. After this start, it doesn't matter how declarer plays; North has no hearts left, and South has no more entries, so declarer is safe for nine tricks. On a non-heart lead, West will need to play correctly to avoid three heart losers.
Book prizes for defence go to Stephen Chang and Jean McSkimming of Bayswater, and Phil Dempster and Bev Cooke of Cairns.

Comments:
Both sides can make game here, but it's hard for EW to get into the bidding, so NS usually got to play the hand.
There were a small but significant number of NS pairs who failed to reach game, with South holding 14 HCP and North holding 7 HCP. Sometimes you need to ignore the point count, and just look at your tricks: with South holding 8 top tricks in his own hand, it's quite likely that North's raise might produce two more tricks for game. You can't be certain, but the odds are certainly in your favour.
Note that 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) will still make if you take away all of North's queens and jacks, leaving him with just a three-count. South has a huge hand.

Comments:
Most pairs stopped safely in 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) or 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) here, but it's still essential to take nine tricks if you want a good matchpoint score.
Declarer's first move should be a club to the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)K. This (a) sets up a club trick, (b) prepares for a club ruff, and (c) gives you an entry to dummy to take the spade finesse.
If East leads a diamond or a heart at trick one, that will give declarer a free trick immediately, making declarer's job a lot easier. Most pairs made nine (or more) so making eight was only worth 34%.
Book prizes for a unique top go to Julie Crewe and Sue Bailey of South Perth.

Comments:
Another hand where both sides should be in game. EW can't actually make game, but it's better to go down in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) than to defend against 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). As a general rule, if you have a ten-card fit in a major (or a nine-card fit and a singleton) then you should just bid game and let the opponents worry about it.
Most pairs in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) managed to make nine tricks, for a good score. South starts by cashing the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)AK, and has to decide what to play at trick three. The images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A gives up a club trick, and a third heart gives up a ruff-and-discard. The images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)4 is the best play, leaving declarer with only eight tricks. South will get the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)AQ eventually.

Comments:
About 20 pairs achieved the EW goal of competing to 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) and making nine tricks, but at most tables NS played the hand. In theory, 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) is a good sacrifice over 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), assuming you don't get doubled, but in practice there wasn't much difference. NS only get 7% for -140 defending 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), but even -100 in 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) is only 16%. For a good score NS have to hope that EW misplay 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) (or let you play in 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) and help you make it).
4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) by EW should lose the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)AJ images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)A images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A, and with no entry to dummy for the club finesse, you should lose a club as well, for -100 (just slightly better than -140).

Comments:
It takes a heart lead to hold 3NT to nine tricks, but there is no reason why East should find this lead, so most declarers made ten.
The key defensive decision comes when declarer leads a spade from dummy, trying to set up a spade trick. If West grabs his images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A, declarer will have two spade tricks (the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)KQ) for a total of 11. If West plays "second hand low" declarer will have only one spade trick.

Comments:
At the time of writing, 20 pairs have bid 6images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), which is an excellent result (98% of the matchpoints). Many pairs played in either 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) or 4images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), confirming that it's not always easy to tell whether a bid is forcing.
There aren't many uncontested auctions where 4images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) is not forcing – once you've already gone as far as 3NT, playing in a partscore is unlikely to be a good idea.
3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) is trickier... even at expert level, there is no universal answer, and all experienced pairs discuss this issue explicitly during system discussion. In the above auction, 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes) (instead of 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)) would be non-forcing for most club pairs, and I expect this is why so many pairs played in 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes).

Comments:
Not many people tried to play in a minor, which isn't surprising when you remember that minor-suit tricks are only worth 20 points, while notrump tricks are worth 30. This is a rare hand where playing in the minor would have worked better.
In 3NT, many declarers made the contract, often with overtricks. The result likely depended on the play of the spade suit. North leads a spade to South's ace, and now South has to continue with the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)Q ("honour from the short hand"). If South returns a low spade instead, the suit will be blocked and North's spades will go to waste.
Nineteen EW pairs played in the 4-1 heart fit, presumably due to a disagreement about playing transfers. Keep practicing... transfers will become second nature after a few months.

Comments:
A lot of pairs made 12 tricks on this board on a diamond lead, but on a non-diamond lead it's much harder.
It's hard to explain why the winning play is to lead a diamond away from the ace, because this is the exact opposite of a how we normally take a finesse. The key principle is "leading toward an honour". If you lead the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)J, North will cover if he has the king, so you can never win a trick with the jack. The only chance of making three diamond tricks is to lead toward the jack. If South goes up with the king, then your jack will become a trick (then you can throw West's clubs on the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)AQ).
Of course, this play won't work if the defenders set up their club trick before you set up your diamond.

Comments:
In the souvenir booklet I said that I had no idea how this board would turn out, and there are nine different contracts that appear more than 20 times on the scoresheet. The "best" contract, 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), appears in 5th place, earning a 75% score (87% if you play the trump suit correctly).
The most popular contract was 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), and this usually went down. The key to making 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) is to capture the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)Q, and this requires two entries to the East hand: the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A and a spade ruff.
There is a twist: if South leads a diamond, declarer must duck the first round (a 'hold-up' play) to sever the defence's communications. If declarer wins the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A at trick one, the defenders will have time (in theory) to attack clubs and put North in with the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)J to give South a club ruff.

Comments:
Jack's auction was not very successful on this board, with 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) failing (although technically, 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) is the "par" contract – that is, the contract you would be in if all four players could see all four hands). As predicted in the souvenir booklet, one off in 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was still an above average score for NS.
Jack reached 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) because of an aggressive 2NT bid by North. This will always be the case on borderline invitation hands: if you pass you might miss game, but if you bid you might get too high.
Only 13 East-West pairs managed to get into the auction and reach their making 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) contract, and this was worth a massive 97% score to EW.

Only two pairs in the 500-table field played in 1images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), and they both made an overtrick for a 97% score. Going one off would still have been worth 92%!
For EW, just getting to 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was worth 84%, and taking 11 tricks was worth 95%.
Most pairs made only ten tricks in 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), because they pitched two hearts on the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)AQ and still had to lose two hearts and a diamond. There's no need to throw away the hearts, because they aren't losers – they can always be ruffed in dummy.
The winning play is to throw away the unavoidable diamond loser. Then, your only losers are the first two hearts.

NS winners' result: 3NT-N, NS460 (NS 96%)

Comments:
The most popular spot was 3NT, despite the eight-card spade fit. The important principle here is "bid the higher of five-card suits, and the cheaper of four-card-suits". So South's first bid should be 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), planning to bid hearts on the next round. This is also known as "start high, finish low": if you bid 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) then 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), then you are too high and can't get back to 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). If you bid 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) then 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), then there is room for partner to "give preference" to 2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes), while staying at the two-level.
With four-card suits, however, you should start with 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), leaving room for partner to bid 1images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) with four.
The logical conclusion from this is that if South does bid spades before hearts, then he must have five spades. With only four, he would have bid the hearts first (bid the cheaper of four card suits).

Comments:
East-West managed to declare at most tables, which suggests that North did not open the bidding. I'm not actually sure what kind of two-level openings are taught in most lessons, but I know Paul Marston teaches simple weak two openings.
Some people might think North's suit is too weak for a two-opening, but I think you should always bid if you have a reasonable excuse, especially when you aren't vulnerable.
Defending against 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) left NS with a 44% score, assuming they managed to beat it (14% if they didn't). Bidding on to 3images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes) was worth 82%.

Comments:
The normal result here is for West to play a spade partscore and lose the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)AK images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)K images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)K, but the field produced several variations on this result. About 70 pairs got to game, with only 22 HCP, no big fit and no source of tricks. I was watching two of the 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) tables, where West jumped to 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) at her second turn – this is a huge overbid, and should have a better suit and a better hand.
Another variation: many declarers failed to take nine tricks. These players either (a) crashed the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)10 and images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)A on the same trick, and ended up losing a trick to the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)8, or (b) allowed North to get a club over-ruff with the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)9.

Comments:
2images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) was worth an exact average score for NS, so the overtrick was valuable. The key is to recognise the value of your images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)10. Run the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)J, losing to the images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)Q, and then your images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)10 will be a trick (along with dummy's images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)AK). Add five spades and the images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A, and that's nine undeniable tricks for a 79% score.
At the table I was watching, East made a takeout double of 1images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes). This is pretty wild, especially vulnerable, but it did allow EW to find their 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) contract. This contract is so good, it didn't even matter that West misplayed it went down – even one off was worth 73% (95% if he'd made it).

Comments:
Illustrating the importance of bidding at Pairs, many South players made a very dangerous 3images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) bid here, refusing to defend 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes). This led to three possible outcomes, all good for South:
(a) it went one off, for a 65% score,
(b) West allowed declarer to set up dummy's hearts, allowing the contract to make for 92%,
or (c) East-West competed to 4images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), which was beaten for 78%.
Where EW declare 3images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes), NS need to prevent an overtrick. The images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A lead gives up a 10th trick quickly, and declarer also has a chance to make 10 on a heart lead.

Comments:
With only 23 HCP, the majority chose to stay out of game here, but that's a very timid decision. Both players should be adding a point for each doubleton, which adds up to 26 total points, plenty for game. On top of that, nine-card major fits rarely need a full 25 points to make game – the paltry images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)AJ, just 5 HCP, produces at least five tricks here (including at least one club ruff).
Making 4images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes) is the challenge. Once the heart finesse fails and trumps break badly, you need to use your last resort: the diamond finesse. You take four spades, images/diamondsm.gif (109 bytes)AJK, images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)A, images/clubsm.gif (113 bytes)A and a club ruff.

Comments:
Nearly everyone stopped in 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), which is perfectly understandable. It's tough when one person has all the trumps and the other has all the points.
At the two tables I was watching, South opened 1images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) and jumped to 4images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), promising an almost-solid suit. North felt this was good enough to justify a Blackwood bid, and bid the slam. One of them bid 6images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes), for an 84% score. The other went for glory and bid 6NT – she'll be disappointed to find that this only scored a few matchpoints more than 6images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes).
For the top board, you needed to make the overtrick in 6images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) (either by ruffing a spade, or setting up dummy's fifth diamond).

Comments:
While squeeze-play is well outside the scope of this event, many squeezes play themselves, without the declarer even being aware of what's happening. North usually led a small heart – not the lead you'd choose against 6NT, but a normal 'fourth-best' lead against 3NT.
That was the end of the defence. Declarer won dummy's images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)7, and now had 11 tricks: six clubs, three diamonds, images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)7 and images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A. Declarer started by cashing the clubs, of course, and North had to find four discards – first the images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)J8 and the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)8, and then a diamond. Now East's diamonds were high, and on the last diamond, North had to find another discard. This time he discarded the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)9, and his images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)K fell under the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)A. A progressive squeeze!

Jack's result: 1NT-E, NS100
Your result: 3images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)-S, NS140 (NS 93%)
NS winners' result: 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes)-S, NS110 (NS 87%)

Comments:
It looks like about half the South players passed 1NT, and about half bid 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes). The bidders got the best of the deal – beating 1NT would have been a fine result (61%) but many pairs didn't beat it, and conceded -90 (27%).
Bidding 2images/heartsm.gif (112 bytes) was an opportunity for +110 (87%), although many Souths did not take advantage of that. With the aid of the heart finesse, declarer should be able to take five hearts and two diamonds, and the eighth trick will inevitably come from the images/spadesm.gif (111 bytes)Q or a long diamond. The applicable memory-aid here is 'eight ever, nine never' – with eight cards missing a queen, you should finesse, and with nine you should 'never' (a serious exaggeration, but a decent mnemonic).
